If your deck looks grey and lifeless, it’s time to give it a makeover with a new stain. If you’ve never oiled a deck before, don’t worry - as Sydney’s trusted decking experts, we have prepared these tips to make staining your new deck a smooth experience.
Water-Based or Oil-Based Stains?
With so many options, choosing the right stain can be daunting. In our experience, water-based oils are easier to apply and last longer than oil-based ones.
We recommend Intec H2oil and Spa & Deck for great results!
Selecting The Right Colour
Choosing the right stain can be overwhelming as there are so many options. Test a few stain samples on an off-cut of your deck or in an inconspicuous spot. Darker stains can hide more grain but may look like paint after multiple coats.
Preparation Is Key
Take your time with prep work—it’s crucial for a good finish. Start with a simple sweep to clear away loose debris. Then, use Intec H2CLEAN and a stiff-bristled brush to remove grease, grime, and other dirt. Sand only if your deck is old or deteriorated. New decking timber should weather for a season or two before staining. Sanding too smooth can hinder stain absorption.
Applying The Oil
Applying the stain correctly is vital for a smooth, even finish:
Use the Right Tools: A lambswool applicator and paintbrush work well. Apply the oil 2-3 boards at a time, completing each row before starting a new one to avoid streaks and patches.
Mask-Off Areas: Use masking tape to protect walls and pavers from unwanted oil. Cut into walls and obstacles with a brush immediately after using the applicator to prevent overlap marks.
When to Re-Apply
Most oils suggest reapplication every two years, but we recommend doing it annually for the best results, especially in high-sunlight areas. Test with water - if it beads, your deck is still protected. If it soaks in, it’s time for another coat. If your deck looks faded, it’s probably ready for a refresh.
